The Importance of Quality Education

The Importance of Quality Education for Nurses

  • Written by Dr. Juli Reynolds (PhD)

The way in which nurses were educated during the 20th Century is no longer adequate for dealing with the realities of healthcare in the 21st Century. As patient needs and care environments have become more complex, nurses need to attain requisite competencies to deliver high-quality care. These competencies include leadership, health policy, system improvement, research, evidence-based practice, teamwork and collaboration, as well as competency in specific content areas such as maternal/child and community/public health.

Nurses also are expected to fulfil ever-expanding roles and to master technological tools and information management systems, while collaborating and coordinating care across teams of health professionals. In order to respond to these increasing demands, NeoConsult International not only focusses on CME/CPD and Advanced Life Support training, but has invested many hours in developing 4, 6 and 12-month curriculums in specialty areas such as NICU, PICU and Healthcare Business Administration.

Nursing is unique among the healthcare professions in the United Arab Emirates, because of the multiple educational pathways required to obtain a Health Authority license. NeoConsult has developed new approaches and educational models to support nurses in obtaining not only CME’s, but high-quality training to prepare them for the demands of this unique environment. For example, competency assessments have evolved from task-based proficiencies to higher-level competencies, that provide a foundation for care management, knowledge and decision-making skills, in a variety of clinical situations and care settings. Additionally, emerging competencies in decision making, quality improvement, systems thinking and team leadership, are all part of professional development.
