  1. Course Overview
  2. Course Topics
  3. Course Objectives
This one-day workshop encompasses the knowledge and understanding of the equipment, procedures, complications, indications, and weaning off mechanical ventilation. The student is guided step-by-step through indications for mechanical ventilation; how to initiate it; how to monitor various body systems while the patient is on mechanical ventilation; how to adjust; and how to wean a patient off the ventilator.
  • Physiology of the respiratory system
  • Mechanics of ventilation
  • Relationship between ventilation and perfusion
  • Respiratory assessment
  • Arterial blood gasses
  • Ventilatory support: modes of ventilation
  • Complications of ventilation
  • Weaning from ventilation
  • Practical Session: ventilation modes
  • Practical Session: endotracheal suctioning
  • Practical Session: use of ventilation bundles – prevention of VAP

On completion of this workshop you should be able to:

  • Recognise the cause of respiratory failure
  • Assess the need for invasive ventilation
  • Describe the characteristics of different modes of mechanical ventilation
  • Outline ventilator settings and monitoring needs for the initiation of mechanical ventilation
  • Describe interactions between ventilator parameters and modifications needed to avoid harmful effects of mechanical ventilation
  • Review the guidelines for initial ventilator management that apply to specific clinical situations
